Paving and hard landscaped areas are an essential part of any successful garden design scheme, as you need places on which to walk so you can easily make your way through the space without walking on the grass or flower beds.
Garden paths can also help draw the eye around the garden, creating a sense of flow and allowing you to structure the space more effectively from the outset. There are lots of options available to you when it comes to garden paths, so here are a few suggestions from the LW Landscapes team to help you work out what you like and what you don’t.
Opt for stepping stones
If you love your lawn and don’t want to lose too much of it for heavy paving, you can add a touch of whimsy to the more practical side of your outdoor space by laying down stepping stones and regular intervals across the grass. This will ensure that the continuity of your lawn remains intact, while allowing you to move freely through the garden.
Combine your path with your patio
For something contemporary and cohesive, perhaps consider combining your path and patio using paving slabs in something like limestone, sandstone or porcelain. The end result will be very sleek and streamlined – ideal if you want to design a minimalist garden with simple, clean lines.
Go for gravel
If you’re working to a budget, gravel is a great choice as it looks beautiful and is very cost effective, as well as being both natural and permeable, so you can help reduce surface water runoff and make your garden more sustainable.
Do make sure that you use edging to great effect, however, as gravel is prone to spreading – and consider using paving near your doorways to stop gravel from making its way into the house.
