The weather has taken a serious turn for the cold now, after that glorious Indian summer we had at the start of October – so you can bet that winter is now well on the way! But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your garden at this time of year… in fact, there are lots of jobs that need doing over the next few weeks that you would be wise not to ignore.
First of all, if you have a lot of containers and pots in your garden, you might want to make sure that you raise them up on pot feet to make sure the bottom of your pot isn’t sat in water, which will help prevent waterlogging and stop your compost from freezing.
This is also the time to start showing local wildlife just how much you appreciate them, if you don’t already. You can encourage lots of winter birds into your garden, simply by putting out bird food! Fat balls are a great idea, as are sunflower seeds and peanuts, which can all help give birds the fats and protein they need to stay strong and healthy till spring.
After you’ve raked up all your leaves from the lawn and any debris you find on your ponds and patios, what about building a seasonal bonfire?
There’s something so autumnal about the smell of bonfires and they can help keep your garden clean, tidy and disease-free – but make sure you only do this every now and again, otherwise your neighbours could call the council to serve you with an abatement notice… which comes with a fine of up to £5,000!
