As a pastime, gardening is incredibly good for our mental health and wellbeing. Watching plants and flowers grow is so very rewarding and a lot of fun, and you get a huge sense of achievement when you grow something from seed… not to mention the fact that you get lots of lovely fresh air at the same time.
But in order to help your garden grow, you need to start off on the right foot and that means making sure you have all the necessary tools and equipment at your disposal so you can hit the ground running.
First of all, you’ll need to have a sturdy pair of gardening gloves, as it can be a little rough on the hands. Think about the kinds of jobs you’re likely to be doing outside and base your glove purchasing decisions on that, but a pair of all-season gloves are probably a good place to start.
You’re also definitely going to need a pair of secateurs, which are similar to scissors but a lot stronger, designed to help you prune and tidy up your plants. Invest in a good pair and they should last you for years.
A garden spade and fork are also both necessary pieces of kit, perfect for getting your vegetable plots ready for planting – and you’ll find it hard to turn the soil without them.
And a hand trowel and hand fork will also come in very useful indeed, but make sure you go for something in plain metal rather than something painted, as the latter is likely to be poorer quality and may not last as long.
