Mosaic Planting: 5 Top Tips To Get The Look

We always strive to keep on top of the latest garden and landscaping design ideas and trends so we can advise our clients as to what might work, when it might work and where it might work.

One emerging trend that you might find of interest is mosaic planting, similar to the wildflower meadow approach to gardening but with a little more intentionality behind it than simply scattering seeds here and there.

To achieve the look, try to plant your seeds in drifts, where you stretch out the grouping of single varieties across your garden so you end up with a beautiful swathe of blocked colour.

This approach does work particularly well in larger gardens but don’t be deterred if you’re working with smaller spaces. You can still achieve a similar effect by bringing in single large flowers and plants, rather than lots of one species.

Get the mosaic planting look

One of the most important elements of mosaic planting is repetition, repeating your planting groups throughout the garden to draw the eye through the space in a natural way, creating a sense of cohesive flow.

And don’t forget that plants are seasonal and you won’t always have beautiful blooms to enjoy. You can enjoy year-round interest in your garden, however, by bringing in different leaf shapes, colours and sizes, as well as planting vertically and investing in low ground cover species.

As our final tip, don’t forget to prioritise structure, as mosaic planting can be a little haphazard if you’re not careful. Get around this by planting evergreen shrubs at different heights, helping you to work out a gorgeous garden layout.
