The sheer range of choice when it comes to garden structures these days is absolutely marvellous, so much so in fact that you’re sure to have a hard time deciding which one’s right for you!
However, if you’re looking to add a touch of whimsy to your outdoor spaces, you could certainly do an awful lot worse than building an architectural garden folly somewhere on site.
These garden buildings can trace their history all the way back to before the 1600s at least, but they really came to the fore during the 18th and 19th centuries in both French and English estates, gardens and parks.
Usually made out of brick, wood or stone, these structures were often built to resemble tall towers, so you could really create something extra special at home if you opt for this particular style.
Traditionally, follies were intended to be decorative additions to the garden, rather than serving as additional functional spaces, but you can give them purpose to suit your lifestyle if this is something you’re keen to achieve.
Need a garden office? A folly could be a brilliantly alternative option to consider. After some entertainment space? Design your folly with this in mind!
Something to consider, however, is that if you decide to go opt for a tower-like structure, you may need to have planning permission in place if it’s above a certain height.
It’s always advisable to check with your local authority before starting building work on projects such as these just to be on the safe side, as you may have to demolish the structure if it does fall foul of planning regulations.
