How To Grow A Low-Carbon Garden

The realities of the climate and biodiversity crisis are quickly setting in for us all and the impact that man is having on the planet is a huge cause for concern. But there’s a lot that can be done to protect the environment and help mitigate the effects of climate change – especially if you’re a gardening enthusiast!

Last year, the RHS launched a planet-friendly gardening campaign to encourage people to think more sustainably when it comes to their outdoor spaces and help the country hit its climate change targets.

Research from the charity shows that if every one of the 30 million gardeners in the UK planted a medium-sized tree and grew it to maturity, the carbon equivalent of driving 11 million times around the earth would be stored.

With that in mind, perhaps you might be inspired to see how you could create a low-carbon garden at home. Here are our top tips!

Grow hedges

Hedges are amazing at sequestering and storing carbon, so ideal for any low-carbon garden. They also provide lots of shelter for wildlife, as well as food sources and nesting sites.

Grow your own

Growing your own food has a significantly lower carbon footprint than what you’ll find in the shops. Permanent planting can help your veggie patch store even more carbon, so include the likes of fruit trees and perennial vegetables, as well as annuals.

Grow a tapestry lawn

Tapestry lawns are always a beautiful addition to any garden and they’re a great way to support local biodiversity, as well as using less water and requiring fewer chemicals. And, no doubt, there are many among you who would rejoice at the lack of maintenance and upkeep these lawns require!

They feature lots of pretty flowers and low-growing plants, using lots of different species to create a tapestry effect. They’re perennial, drought-tolerant and absolutely perfect for any eco-friendly garden!
