How To Stop Your Garden Fence Going Green

A wooden fence of any kind will always help create a truly striking look in the garden, while affording you all the privacy you need to enjoy your outdoor spaces without having to worry about prying eyes and passersby.

However, over time you may start to see the timber start to show signs of wear and tear. This is entirely natural, of course, since the fence is exposed to the elements at all times, which can give rise to a range of different issues that you’ll need to keep on top of if it’s to stand the test of time.

One common concern that many homeowners come up against is a greening effect on the wood itself. This is simply down to an accumulation of moss and algae on the timber and, although it’s largely harmless and not a huge cause of worry, it can detract from the visual effect of your fence.

The good news is that there’s a lot you can do to prevent this green hue from making an appearance and a lot you can do to clean it off if you’ve found your fence has already succumbed.

For prevention, you can find heat-treated panels that are more resistant to the algae that causes the green tinge. These are widely available so you shouldn’t have much trouble finding them, identified by an HT stamped on the panel of wood. Similarly, pressure treated wooden panels can also help prevent mould and algae growth.

If you already have a fence in place, you can support it by using a stain or sealant that can help protect the wood.

Cleaning the green off your fence is a relatively simple job. A pressure washer is the quickest and most efficient way of getting the greenery off, but you can always use a bleach and water solution to achieve the same if you don’t have access to this machinery.
