Our Top Tips For Designing A Weather-Resilient Garden

One of the biggest trends for garden and landscape design for 2025 is weather resilience and what changes can be brought in that will ensure your outdoor spaces continue to flourish and grow in the face of a changing climate.

The climate crisis is expected to bring with it more frequent and more extreme weather events, including flooding and drought, with weather patterns likely to change as a result, as well.

This all spells impending doom for those gardens and landscapes that haven’t been designed with this in mind, so if you are planning a garden makeover soon, it could be a good idea to consider how you can ensure that your outdoor spaces are adaptable and able to recover well, no matter the weather conditions.

Your first step to building resilience into your garden is to understand what conditions it’s likely to face. Are you more likely to be affected by flooding or drought, for example? Which direction does the garden point in? What type of soil do you have? Is the space badly affected by wind?

Asking these questions will help you decide what needs to be done and what kind of plants you should bring in that will allow you to work with what you’ve got, rather than fighting against it.

If you know you’re likely to be affected by drought, use plants that will be able to withstand a lack of water for much of the year. And if you know your garden is often flooded, a rain garden could be the way to go, with plants that are able to withstand a certain amount of waterlogging.

Nurturing your soil is the best place to begin to help your outdoor spaces be more resilient. Mulching will improve soil structure and help it to retain moisture, reducing the risk of surface water runoff.
