Spotlight On: Mindful Landscaping & Garden Design

Life in the 21st century can certainly be stressful and, as such, our outdoor spaces are more important now than ever, giving us somewhere to go to escape, unwind and relax.

This is something that can be achieved in even the smallest of spaces and whether you have an interest in gardening or not – and the idea of curating spaces for wellness will be on full display at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, taking place in May.

A variety of different spaces that all aim to promote mindfulness (the practice of anchoring yourself in the present moment) will be available for viewing as part of the Balcony and Container Gardens category… excellent food for thought if you’re planning something similar for your patios and other hard landscaped areas at home.

The Navium Marine Blue Mind Garden, for example, has been designed by Ashleigh Aylett, delivering a sense of calm through proximity to water. Coastal planting in muted shades of blue and green can be seen, with pots and floor tiles made from repurposed oceanic material and old seashells. A water feature has been included to create soothing sounds.

And the MS Amlin Peace of Mind garden, designed by Hamzah-Adam Desai, focuses on colour psychology, with different shades of green featuring throughout to help create a sense of calm and restoration, coupled with blues and purples for peace and harmony. Oranges, reds and yellows, meanwhile, are introduced to help energise and uplift the viewer.

Elsewhere, the C6 garden, designed by Joshua Fenton, could prove inspirational, showcasing how carbon can be sequestered in gardens both big and small, using bio char to improve the soil and remove carbon from the carbon cycle for up to 1,000 years.

The event itself is taking place between May 20th and 24th, with tickets now up for sale… so get yours now if you want to see some amazing gardens this spring!
