3 City Garden Design Tips & Tricks

It would be amazing if we all had access to our own giant gardens at home, but unfortunately this is far from reality, with the average garden size in the UK relatively small at approximately 188 metres square… which is about half the size of a basketball court.

Of course, there are regional variations and if you live in a city you’ll likely find that your garden is even smaller than that, or entirely nonexistent.

But just because you’ve got a smaller space on your hands doesn’t mean you can’t do something magical with it.

Here are some excellent hard and soft landscaping tips for city gardens to help you get started with your outdoor projects this year.

1. Go vertical

One of the best ways to make the most of a small garden is to plant vertically with the likes of trellises, planters and living walls. This will give you optimal amounts of greenery to enjoy without taking up precious floor space.

2. Think about landscaping & planting ratios

Garden design is all about balance, so make sure you get the ratios between planting and landscaping just right, aiming for around 50 per cent of plants and furniture, and 50 per cent of hard landscaping. This will ensure that the space looks welcoming but doesn’t feel crowded.

3. Opt for lighter colour palettes

Interestingly, your choice of colour can make a big difference to how big your garden feels. Deliver a beautifully uplifting and airy aesthetic by choosing cooler shades like blues and whites, creating the illusion of space.

Similarly, lighter materials for your paving, patios and decked areas can create a sense of space, brightening up the garden and bouncing light around.
