Now that autumn is well on the way, it’s time to think about what you can do to your lawn to ensure that it makes it through to spring in one piece.
There’s a lot you can do at this time of year that will pay dividends in the future. Because we still see a lot of warm weather in September and October, and because there’s still residual heat in the ground from the summer months, it’s the perfect time to carry out any necessary lawn repairs, do some seeding and give the grass some nutrition, as well as aerating and scarifying to keep it in good health.
Feeding your lawn is one of the top jobs to do during autumn, as it will help its post-summer recovery while also affording it a level of protection against low temperatures in winter, as well.
Aeration is also something to focus on over the coming weeks, which involves creating small holes in the ground to improve drainage and prevent waterlogging, while supporting nutrient uptake and improving air circulation.
Make sure that the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged before aerating, as the holes you make will seal up and you won’t get the circulation you’re looking for.
You can use a spike tine aerator to punch solid holes in the turf or a hollow tine aerator, which removes the compacted soil as you work. Those of you with smaller gardens can even wear lawn aerator shoes!
Beyond that, make sure you keep an eye on your lawn between now and the new year, looking out for weeds, moss growth and leaves. Scarifying your lawn to remove thatch and other debris can make a big difference to the health of your lawn in spring.
