A brilliant way of coming up with lots of new ideas for your outdoor spaces is to visit lots of public gardens in your local area and beyond – and very exciting news has just come out of Salford today (May 18th), with the opening of the RHS Garden Bridgewater.
The grand opening of the 154-acre site was delayed by the pandemic, but RHS ambassador and TV presenter Carol Klein has just cut the red ribbon, opening the doors for the public for the very first time.
The Salford garden is, in fact, the biggest hands-on horticultural project to be undertaken in Europe since planning permission was granted back in 2017 – and it is the first-ever RHS Garden to be located in an urban area.
Ms Klein said: “This garden represents not only the spirit of the RHS, but that of the north-west, pioneering and looking to the future. It also reflects the spirit of the area and its two cities, and shows what can be achieved when communities work together.”
There are all sorts of different gardens to explore within the site, everything from the Worsley Welcome Garden to the Chinese Streamside Garden. There’s also a woodland play area, which is sure to keep the kids well entertained, and Ellesmere Lake, which is four acres wide with its very own island grotto.
The Kitchen Garden is also sure to give you lots of good ideas if you’re keen to start growing your own food at home, with more than 100 planting beds that are both beautiful and productive, supplying the Bridgewater Cafe with fruit and vegetables.
