Approximately 6.3 million properties in England are at risk of flooding, whether that’s from rivers, the sea or surface water, with around 11.3 million people living in at-risk areas. As such, working out ways to reduce flood risks and protect our homes is a must.
One way in which this can be achieved is through the use of smart paving, which has been specifically designed to be permeable so that rainwater can soak directly through it into the ground below, much like natural soil would do.
How does smart paving work?
More traditional hard surfaces like concrete or tarmac prevent rainwater from seeping through, forcing it instead to run off into drains and sewers. During periods of intense and heavy rainfall, this can overwhelm the system, increasing flood risks.
But with smart paving, the water simply passes through the top layer into a sub base below, which temporarily holds excess water so that it can be released slowly back into the ground at a more manageable pace.
This type of patio and driveway material also helps to support pollution control, trapping oils, heavy metals and debris as the water passes through the different layers so they don’t find their way into local waterways.
What are the different types of permeable paving materials?
Loose gravel
One of the most cost-effective materials going, gravel is a great option for permeable paving, supporting water infiltration while looking good at the same time!
Resin-bound surfaces
If you’re concerned about gravel displacement, you could consider using resin, which coats the stones and holds them in place while still allowing the water to seep through.
Concrete block paving
Consider using manufactured concrete blocks made with wider joints or spacer lugs to help support water seepage between the units.
Porous tarmac
Alternatively, you could opt for permeable tarmac, which has been engineered with an open aggregate structure to allow natural water drainage into a sub-base.
