How To Keep Patios Weed-Free

One day, you’re looking at your beautiful new patio and it’s the crowning glory of your outdoor spaces and the next day, you look at it and lots of pesky little weeds have sprung up, apparently as if from nowhere, quite ruining the look and feel of your garden.

As well as being somewhat unsightly and scruffy, having lots of weeds in the paving cracks and on hard surfaces represents a health risk and they can become very slippery underfoot when wet, so it’s important to keep on top of weed growth if you can.

Luckily, there’s a lot you can do to help keep your patio free from weeds, ensuring that it looks beautiful all year round.

Of course, one of the most tried and tested methods of weed removal is a little bit of elbow grease and it can actually be quite satisfying (and, dare we say it, even fun!) to get down to ground level and pull them out yourself. However, it’s important to make sure you get the roots up as well, or you’ll find the weeds return quicker than you can say licketysplit.

Another option – and a great one if you’re not feeling particularly mobile and don’t want to get on your hands and knees – is to use a pressure washer. This can really blast them into oblivion, but do take care not to overuse the appliance, as you run the risk of damaging the paving and affecting the sand structure beneath the slabs if you do.

And then, of course, there’s chemical weed killers which are very effective, but be careful not to let it come into contact with any of your prize plants as these chemicals are indiscriminate and will kill your entire garden if you let it!
